Electromechanic solutions for aircraft cabin interiors

KENDRION provides the aviation industry with custom designed solutions integrating electronic control, solenoid actuators and fluid technology into highly efficient mechatronic systems. Our components and systems for aircrafts include pneumatic actuators, electro-mechanic locking systems and fluid systems for lavatories and on-board kitchens.

Application reports in aircraft interiors

Smart switching valves for Galley and Lavatory water systems

Kendrion develops electromagnetic switching and proportional valves according to customer specifications in order to optimize non-contact actuation in the entire lavatory area. The Kendrion water valve concept specifically supports pressurized water systems by allowing remaining line air to escape from the valve after the system has been drained and refilled until a continuous flow of water is assured. Unpleasant pressure surge effects with uncontrolled splash water are thus avoided.

Advantages

  • Compact in-line design
  • Corrosion resistant
  • Splash-proof
  • Self-venting

Compact Solenoid Door Lock for in-cabin application

With a shock resistance of 100 g and a high maximum static holding force of at least 1,600 N, the compact magnetic lock SL/AL reliably performs many locking tasks in the cabin area. It is used for drawer locks in first and business class seats, locking mechanisms in galleys and trolleys, locks in lavatory areas or even in cabin doors in business jets.
An integrated high-performance solenoid enables easy control and combines quick unlocking with a pleasant acoustic signal.

Advantages

  • Emergency release and monitoring of the closed position
  • High maximum static holding force of at least 1,600 N
  • Can be used at ambient temperatures of up to 100 °C
  • Can also be used at humidity levels >90% r.F.

Reliable valve module for intelligent seat comfort systems

Several solenoid valves of type 63.1 connected in parallel and in series form a seat comfort valve assembly that fills and deflates the air cushions in the seats. An integrated pressure sensor constantly monitors the pressure in the air cushions and compensates for different body weights and proportions of the passengers, as well as for fluctuations due to flight altitude. The passenger benefits from a pleasant and quiet massage.

Advantages

  • Compact design
  • High flow rates at low power consumption
  • Quiet
  • Fast response time
  • Good control characteristics

Locking unit for oxygen masks in aircrafts

In the unlikely event of pressure loss in the cabin, oxygen masks are automatically released overhead the passenger seats. For this application Kendrion has developed and produced the entire locking unit with aviation certified materials.

A bistable solenoid system is the core of the unit. During normal operation the integrated permanent solenoid maintains the locked state currentless. In case of an emergency, a brief electric pulse activates the locking unit via the coil. The drop down deployment container opens and the oxygen masks are released.

Advantages:

  • Reduced weight through compact design
  • Optimised energy consumption through currentless locking
  • High functional safety in accordance with aviation customer specifications
  • Already used in the B787, B737, A320 and A330

Valves and assemblies for emergency oxygen supply

In the unlikely event of a cabin depressurization, passengers need to be reliably supplied with oxygen immediately until the aircraft descends to an altitude where the air contains sufficient oxygen for breathing. Our 63.1 series valve assembly can provide passenger support by integrating sensor technology through proportional technology or alternatively through
breath-controlled switching, even over a prolonged descent from high altitude with oxygen.

Advantages:

  • Oxygen compatible design
  • Compact lightweight
  • Sensor integration and PCB mounting possible
  • Proportional or switching valve

Aviation Engineering for Cabin Interiors

Aviation engineering calls for reliable and durable solutions developed and manufactured according to specific standards.

KENDRION offers such solutions designed according to customer-specific requirements. For this purpose, we utilise our special experience in the field of aviation engineering, combining it with our complete technology portfolio and our comprehensive know-how in fields, such as electronics, control systems, as well as solenoid and pneumatic technology.

Let us inspire you with innovative solutions in the following product areas:

Electromagnetic technology
Magnetic locking systems for doors, lids etc. Our Stored Energy technology is characterised by pulse control for opening with minimum power requirements. They require no power in opened and closed condition while offering high locking forces at a small and compact design.

Fluid technology
Valves for compressed air and oxygen supply in life support systems. Media separated water valves for sanitary equipment or for water and drink supply in galley equipment. Valve systems for solutions to enhance the seating comfort. The Airboard® is an interesting solution integrating an electronic control board and a valve unit. This offers a lightweight and highly compact alternative to conventional solutions based upon valves mounted on a connection plate and separate control electronics.

Control technology
Electronic components represent one of our traditional technology areas. We use electronic solutions to control solenoid and fluid systems to realise maximum performance in combination with low space requirements and minimum weight.

Based upon individual components and complete systems integrating mechanics and electronic, we efficiently design pneumatic actors, solenoid-based locking-systems or fluid systems for lavatories and on-board kitchens.
